Thucydides on the Plague - Livius.

Thucydides on the plague [2.47.2] In the first days of summer the Spartans and their allies, with two-thirds of their forces as before, invaded Attica, under the command of Archidamus, son of Zeuxidamus, king of Sparta, and sat down and laid waste the country. [2.47.3] Not many days after their arrival in Attica the plague first began to show itself among the Athenians. Thucydides' account of the plague in Athens in 430 B.C. uses a structure based on the Hippocratic approach, as well as “scientific” medical terminology. The report of the plague is immediately followed by Pericles' Funeral Oration. Money, Expense, and Naval Power in Thucydides' History 1-5.24. Berkeley: University of California Press. 1993. Of all the leading personalities who left their imprint on the history of the Peloponnesian war Tissaphernes was to Thucydides the most enigmatic. Although judgements on the ability and character of individuals occur more frequently in the eighth book of the History than in other parts, Thucydides apparently did not feel himself to be in a position to include an explicit judgement on Tissaphernes. Most often, Thucydides is placed in the “realist” category, and attempts are made to show how Thucydides is a particular type of realist corresponding to our modern scholarly distinctions.

Chapter I The State of Greece from the earliest Times to the Commencement of the Peloponnesian War Thucydides, an Athenian, wrote the history of the war between the Peloponnesians and the Athenians, beginning at the moment that it broke out, and believing that it would be a great war and more worthy of relation than any that had preceded it. This belief was not without its grounds. Proctor's The experience of Thucydides for The London Review of Books not reprinted here, though it is cited with his other book reviews in Appendix 2. Here he remarked that Thucydides.

Thucydides' text also sheds light on the origin of a specific scientific genre - the medical case history. In describing a devastating plague in Athens, Thucydides uses the Hippocratic approach, following an ancient genre or form that is remarkably similar to the modern medical case history. Thucydides was one of the noble and distinguished citizens, and had been his greatest opponent; and, when Archidamus, the King of the Lacedaemonians, asked him whether he or Pericles were the better wrestler, he made this answer: "When I," said he, "have thrown him and given him a fair fall, by persisting that he had no fall, he gets the better. Because he had failed to save Amphipolis, Thucydides spent the rest of the war in exile, a period of twenty years Thuc. 5.26.5. He thus had the opportunity to meet with people of both sides, Peloponnesians no less than Athenians, and could investigate matters “at his leisure” καθ᾽ ἡσυχίαν. 150 quotes from Thucydides: 'Self-control is the chief element in self-respect, and self-respect is the chief element in courage.', 'Most people, in fact, will not take the trouble in finding out the truth, but are much more inclined to accept the first story they hear.', and 'For the whole earth is the tomb of famous men; not only are they commemorated by columns and inscriptions in their own. THE INFLUENCE OF ALCIBIADES ON THUCYDIDES, BOOK 8 BY H. D.
