In this reprinted classic originally published in 1971 Noel Hynes compiled a comprehensive, critical review of the literature pertaining to streams. Included are physical and chemical characteristics of flowing waters, plantlife, the benthos, fish and finally, man's effects on watercourses. This has been recorded by Hynes 1961 in a study of a small stream in the Isle of Man polluted by BHC, a sheep dip. Hynes suggested that the increase in oligochaetes, which were largely Tubifex tubifex, was probably caused indirectly by the insecticide eliminating worm predators.

Hugh Bernard Noel Hynes, BSc, PhD, DSc, ARCS, FRSC 1917-2009, was a biologist and professor at the University of Waterloo and credited with founding the field of lotic limnology, the study of flowing fresh water.
