Background Ballykeel is well attested as a townland name throughout Ireland but is particularly common in Cos Antrim and Down Census 1871.The second element is normally the adjective caol ‘narrow’ but, when one considers the boundaries of this particular townland, this derivation does not appear very apt. If the form on the OSL map is accurate, it may be that we are dealing with a. Although Ballymoney as a townland name is found in Cos Wicklow, Wexford and Galway, it is particularly common in Ulster where it is most numerous in Cos Down, Derry and Antrim.
