Mayorcas, 1963 Dating back to the 16th century, the craft of English Needlework is defined as embroidery carried out in either wool, silk or other thread worked. English needlepoint rugs, renowned for their profuse ﬂoral motifs, reached an artistic zenith in 1700-1750 but were produced through the end of the nineteenth century. Needlepoint rugs were mainly used as table carpets, the earliest pieces, dating from 1550-1650, exhibited scrolls of ﬂowers with pictorial and heraldic motifs. The sewing needle holds an intrinsically important place in history. One of the earliest stories of the humble needle appears in the Bible and Quran; Adam and Eve sew fig leaves together to adorn themselves with an apron for some modesty, and the Quran references the needle as one of the five tools brought to Paradise by Adam.
